Today's show (A 4 hour special) is a look at the new book called The In Crowd, which is a look  at the development of the northern soul scene from it's inception up to present day, it is writen by Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell.  Loads of music inbetween the chat on the show, here's the lowdown..... Mike & Stuart are in the pub having a beer, the conversation always comes round to Soul, and this time it's the book Soul Survivors by David Nowell & Russ Winstanley which concentrated mainl on Wigan Casino,  "wouldn't it be really good to do the whole thing, the complete story of Northern Soul, where it started, the clubs, the people and the music", so there we had the idea for the book. Dobbie Gray - The In Crowd, Martha Reeves - Come Get These Memories, Major Lance, from 1964, The Monkey Time, and onto records linked tto the legendary Twisted Wheel Club, Manchester, 1964, Jackie Ross - Selfish One which as well as the others were played in a lot of mod clubs at the time and all reflect the roots of the scene. During the production of the book Stuart & Mike visited loads of current clubs, another section of music, Homer Banks - A Lot Of Love, Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart, Alvin Cash & The Crawlers - Twine Time, the crawlers were the backing dancers for Alvin Cash when he played at The Wheel, and gave a lot of inspiration to the soul and mod dancers of the time. Etta James & Sugar Pie De Santo - Do I Make Myself Clear.
Tony Banks gave them a 12,000 word interview, and that's a lot of words, he was telling about his early days as a DJ at Leeds Mecca, working with a very young Jimmy Saville and exploits of his record buying and DJ'ing, the next record is dedicated to Tony and is Bud Harper - Mr Soul.  Onto one of the rarest records of the time, it came out in 1965 on British Motown, All For You - Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers, Bettye Swanne - Make Me Yours - Johnnie Taylor - Zig Zag Lightbing, Bobby Bland - Call On Me, Robert Parker - Barefootin, a New Orleans recording from 1966 and Art Freeman - Slipping Around, at the time a huge record at The Wheel & The Mojo and selling for 5 times the average weekly wage at the time because although it was released on UK Atlantic, it was deleted fairly shortly after. Onto some detail about "The Motown Appreciation Society" set up by Dave Godin to get Motown better recognition and representation in the UK and a tribute recording to Dave and the UK Motown fans, featuring, Berry Gordy, Smokey, Stevie, marvin and others all saying hi.
More music and Franki Valli - You're Ready Now, Dynatones - The Fife Piper, Jackie Edwards - Feel So Bad, Marvin Smith - Have More Time, Betty Everett - Getting Mighty Crowded, Bobby Sheen - Doctor Love, and onto a hugely popular dance record, first issued on UK Stateside, then Sue, then Mojo The Fascinations - Girls Are Out To Get You.
Denice La Salle - A Love Reputation, Alexander Patten - A Little Loving Sometime, Leon Haywood - Baby Reconsider, Donald Height - Talk Of The Grapevine, Invitations - What's Wrong With Me Baby, Doris Troy - I'll Do Anything, Jackie Lee - Darkest Days, Major Lance - Investigate, Vibrations - Surprise Party For Baby, Lorenzo Manly - Swoop Down On You (a huge dancer at the Catacoombs Club in Wolverhampton) Jimmy Conwell - Cigarette Ashes.
More Music as we come forward from the early days, Earl Wright - Thumb A Ride, Lou Johnson - Unsatisfied, Soul Twins - Quick Change Artist, Jerry Williams - If You Ask Me.
